JG&A recently completed the Master Landscape Plan for Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia. The plan provides an overall framework for landscape organization and treatment based on the history and context of the cemetery. It was completed as part of mitigation for a proposed project subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
The Master Landscape Plan includes documentation and a narrative regarding the historical development of the landscape as a basis for the plan. Historic design and development of the cemetery serve as the foundation for landscape recommendations. Planning objectives include: landscape recommendations based on the historic character of the cemetery in order to preserve the setting of the original cemetery design; adherence to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the associated Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes; landscape recommendations in line with the landscaping design criteria listed in NCA Facilities Design Guide, Site Development Criteria; maintenance of existing cemetery tree canopy and landscape recommendations for an ideal tree canopy for the long-range future; and a comprehensive plant list suitable for the local climate.
The Master Landscape Plan provides general direction and guidance, while allowing flexibility to accommodate potential future enhancements.
